What do you think about when you hear these terms: culture, race, ethnicity, white privilege, “the talk”…?
This issue of Edge of Faith explores the challenging, divisive, and complex matters of race in America. Our goal is
neither to alienate nor accuse, but instead to shine a light of truth on the past (and, frankly, present) in the hopes of
creating bridges of understanding and acceptance in the future. As projections by the Census Bureau indicate that
the U.S. population will become “majority minority” in 2044, this couldn’t be a more pressing issue. As citizens, as
humans, we cannot afford to ignore or politicize this topic. To quote Jim Wallis (America’s Original Sin: Racism, White
Privilege, and the Bridge to a New America), “We need to better understand the past so we can cross the bridge to a
new, freer American future where our growing diversity is experienced as a great benefit and not as a great threat.”
